Surface Preparation

Bare Wood

  1. Sand thoroughly with medium to fine grit sandpaper, always moving in the direction of the wood grain.
  2. Remove dust with a tack rag to ensure a clean surface.

Previously Finished Surfaces

  1. Sand to remove imperfections and gloss using 220-grit sandpaper.
  2. Clean the surface with a tack rag.

Stained Surfaces

  1. Ensure the stain is completely dry before applying the polyurethane.
  2. Do not sand the uncoated stained surface to avoid uneven application.

Note: For a finer topcoat, applying Old Masters® Oil-Based Sanding Sealer before the clear finish is highly recommended.

Application Instructions

  1. Stir Thoroughly: Stir the polyurethane well before and during application. Avoid shaking the container.
  2. Tool Selection: Use a pure bristle or polyester brush, flat pad, or spray gun. For large flat areas like floors, a lambswool applicator is recommended.
  3. Application Technique:
  • Apply in full, even coats along the direction of the grain.
  • For wood floors, maintain a wet edge to avoid lap marks.
  1. Drying Time:
  • Allow 3 hours to dry to touch and 6 hours before recoating under ideal conditions.
  • Overnight drying is recommended for best results.
  1. Sanding Between Coats:
  • Lightly sand with 220-grit sandpaper to promote adhesion and a finer finish.
  • Remove sanding dust with a tack rag before the next coat.
  1. Reapply:
  • Two coats are standard, but high-traffic areas may require additional coats for optimal protection.

Additional Tips

  • Always test the finish on an inconspicuous area to ensure compatibility and adhesion.
  • Avoid direct sunlight and extreme air movement during application to prevent uneven drying.
  • Use mineral spirits or paint thinner for cleanup, ensuring compliance with local VOC regulations.
