Surface Preparation

Weathered Hardwood

Previously unfinished hardwood that has weathered or discoloured should be thoroughly cleaned before staining.

Penofin recommends cleaning weathered wood with Pro-Tech Cleaner #2 followed by Pro-Tech Brightener #3 to help reverse weathering and discolouration and prepare the wood for stain absorption.

Previously Finished Wood

If the hardwood was previously coated with a non-Penofin finish, the existing finish should be completely removed before applying Penofin.

Clean and properly prepare the exposed wood before staining so the penetrating oil can enter the wood fibres.

How to Apply Penofin Hardwood Formula

Shake or stir Penofin thoroughly before and during application.

Apply to clean, dry wood using:

• Brush
• Stain pad
• Appropriate sprayer

Brushes and stain pads generally provide excellent control when working with dense hardwood.

Apply the product thoroughly and back-brush it into the wood, leaving little to no excess material on the surface.

Allow Penofin to penetrate for approximately 20–30 minutes.

After the penetration period, thoroughly wipe the entire surface with a clean, nap-free cloth.

Do not allow Penofin to dry as a film on top of the wood.

Failure to remove excess material can result in a sticky or tacky surface.
