Roman Pro-838 Heavy Duty Clear Wallpaper Adhesive
Roman Pro-838 Heavy Duty Clear is a commercial-grade wallcovering adhesive for contractors and DIYers hanging medium to heavyweight wallcoverings. It has high wet tack and a thick, ready-to-use consistency, with enough slip to position each drop. It's low VOC (under 5 g/L), dries clear and cleans up with water. Apply it with a roller, brush or pasting machine.

Where to Use It
Medium to heavyweight wallcoverings, including commercial vinyl, wall carpet and specialty textiles, over clean, dry, sound walls or a Roman primer. Interior use only. Not strippable. Not recommended over existing wallpaper. Don't use it when the room is below 10 °C (50 °F).

Application Guide
- Prep the wall. It must be dry, smooth, clean, free of grease and structurally sound. Check paint bonding and repair damaged drywall or plaster.
- Prime if needed. Hang over bare drywall or a Roman primer such as Pro-977 Ultra Prime.
- Check the room. Keep it above 10 °C (50 °F). In a Canadian winter, heat the room before and while you hang.
- Stir if needed. Use it as is. Do not add water.
- Apply a thin, even coat with a pasting machine, brush or roller. Keep it off the face of embossed, textured or delicate wallcoverings.
- Hang and smooth the strip, adjusting as needed.
- Clean up at once. Wipe excess off with clean water before it dries.
FAQ
1How much Pro-838 do I need?
A gallon covers about 280 sq ft of wallcovering. A 12 × 12 ft room with 8 ft ceilings has about 384 sq ft of wall, so plan on about 1.4 gallons. An accent wall of 10 × 8 ft is 80 sq ft, which is just over a quart.
2Which wallcoverings is it for?
Roman lists medium to heavyweight wallcoverings, including commercial vinyl, wall carpet and specialty textiles. Always check your wallcovering maker's adhesive advice too.
3Pro-838 vs Pro-880: which should I buy?
Pro-838 is heavy duty and not strippable. Pro-880 is strippable with fabric-backed vinyl over bare drywall and also suits lighter wallcoverings. If you may remove the wallpaper later, look at Pro-880.
4Do I need a wallpaper primer?
Roman says to apply it over new, bare drywall or over a Roman primer. On painted or other surfaces, use a primer such as Pro-977.
5Can I thin it with water?
No. Roman says not to dilute Pro-838. It comes ready to use.
6Can I use it over old wallpaper?
Roman doesn't recommend it, because of fire-rating concerns. Remove the old wallcovering first.
7Is it for exterior or bathroom use?
Roman lists it for interior use only. Ask your wallcovering maker about humid rooms.
8Can I store it in a cold garage?
Store it in a cool, dry place and never let it freeze. Bring it indoors in winter, and don't hang wallpaper in a room below 10 °C (50 °F).
