Penofin Stain & Sealer is a penetrating, oil-based semi-transparent wood stain and sealer in one. It's one of the easiest deck stains to apply: no wiping, no back-brushing on vertical surfaces, no laps or streaks, and you can apply it in direct sun and high heat. It stands up to rain within minutes and protects against water, UV, mold and mildew without cracking, chipping or flaking.

Penofin or Messmer's UV Plus?

Application Guide
- Strip old film finishes. Remove any paint, solid stain or film-forming sealer by sanding or chemical stripping.
- Clean the wood. Use a deck cleaner on new wood, and a cleaner plus brightener on weathered wood. Let it dry completely.
- Let new wood season until its moisture content is under 12%. Lightly sand off any loose fibres.
- Apply by brush, roller, pump sprayer or airless sprayer at 4–32 °C. Full sun is fine.
- On decks and other flat surfaces, spread out any puddles with a rag, brush or roller. Vertical surfaces need no back-brushing.
- Second thin coat after 1 hour, or apply one heavier coat.
- Wait 72 hours before heavy foot traffic or putting furniture back.
FAQ
1How much Penofin do I need for my deck?
Plan on 125–175 sq ft per 3.79 L for two thin coats on smooth wood. A 300 sq ft deck usually needs 2–3 gallons, plus more for railings, steps and rough boards.
2Can I really apply it in direct sunlight?
Yes. Penofin says heat and direct sun have no effect on how it performs, as long as you're between 4 and 32 °C.
3What if it rains after I stain?
Penofin Stain & Sealer withstands rain and water within minutes of application, so a surprise shower won't ruin the job.
4Do I need to wipe off the excess?
No wiping is needed, and vertical surfaces don't need back-brushing. On decks, just spread out any puddles with a rag, brush or roller.
5Can I put it over my old deck stain?
Only over a penetrating oil like itself. Paint, solid stains and film-forming sealers must be stripped first so the oil can soak in.
6How do I maintain it?
Clean it each season. When the colour looks dull or faded, clean and reapply. There's no sanding or stripping between coats.
