Class “A” Fire Retardant Protection for Exterior Wood Surfaces

Flame Control Exterior Guard Basecoat No. 20-20A is a VOC-compliant, Class “A” exterior fire retardant paint designed to reduce flame spread on combustible building materials.

This low-VOC, water-based intumescent coating dries to a flat latex finish and helps protect wood and composite substrates by forming an insulating foam layer when exposed to heat or flame.

Ideal for exterior applications protected from direct weathering, Exterior Guard Basecoat can be used under siding, cladding, or other exterior finish systems where improved surface burning characteristics are required.

Flame Control Exterior Guard Basecoat is designed for use on combustible substrates such as dimensional lumber, plywood, OSB, fiberboard, and composite wood. When applied at the recommended spread rate, it helps upgrade treated surfaces by reducing flame spread and delaying heat penetration.

This coating is commonly used in commercial, institutional, industrial, and residential applications where fire retardant coatings are required.

Topcoat Requirements

A topcoat is not required when Exterior Guard Basecoat is protected from direct weathering, such as under siding or cladding.

When used as the final exposed surface coating, Flame Control Exterior Guard Topcoat or an equivalent high-quality exterior topcoat must be applied to protect the basecoat from sunlight and weather exposure.

Application Guidelines

Apply only to clean, dry, properly prepared surfaces. Remove dirt, grease, oil, wax, rust, loose paint, and other contaminants before coating.

New wood, fiberboard, and porous surfaces should be primed with a quality exterior wood primer before applying Exterior Guard Basecoat. Ferrous metal surfaces must be primed with a universal metal primer; however, this product does not provide a fire resistance rating on metal surfaces.

Do not apply when air or surface temperatures are below 50°F / 10°C. Protect from freezing.

Airless Spray Recommendations
