Howard Products FAQ

1Which Howard product restores a faded or scratched wood finish?

Restor-A-Finish. It blends minor scratches and removes white heat rings, water marks, sun fade and smoke damage without stripping the finish. Test a hidden spot, wipe on with a soft cloth in small sections and wipe dry. Wait 30 minutes, then protect with Feed-N-Wax. Howard says it is not for floors or exteriors and may not penetrate hard polyurethane.

2What is the difference between Restor-A-Finish and Feed-N-Wax?

Restor-A-Finish repairs the look of a damaged finish. Feed-N-Wax conditions and polishes with beeswax, carnauba wax and orange oil, and Howard suggests reapplying about monthly as wood looks dry. Many people use them in that order: restore first, then wax.

3Which Howard product is safe for cutting boards and butcher block?

Use Cutting Board Oil (food-grade mineral oil) and Butcher Block Conditioner (mineral oil, beeswax and carnauba wax). New boards take at least 2 coats of oil; thick butcher block takes 3 to 4 coats with at least an hour between them. Clean first with Cutting Board Cleaner, which is not dishwasher safe. Howard says Feed-N-Wax is not for food-prep surfaces.

4Orange Oil, Lemon Oil or Feed-N-Wax: which should I use?

Orange Oil and Lemon Oil are spray polishes made with citrus oils and refined mineral oil, with no silicone or linseed oil. Feed-N-Wax adds beeswax and carnauba wax for more conditioning and a protective coat. Howard advises avoiding Lemon Oil on floors because of the slipping hazard.

5Can I use Howard products on outdoor wood furniture?

SunShield is made for both indoor and outdoor furniture and adds UV inhibitors against sun fade. It does not waterproof wood or protect flat surfaces from standing water. Restor-A-Finish is not recommended for exterior surfaces.

6Can I use Howard Leather Conditioner on any leather?

On smooth leather only. Howard says Leather Conditioner and Leather Cleaner are not for suede, nubuck or aniline leather. Test a hidden area, clean first, let the conditioner sit at least 5 minutes, then wipe off the excess.

7Is there a temperature limit for applying Howard products?

Howard's product pages do not list an application temperature, so follow the label and test a hidden spot first. If you need help choosing a product for your project, contact us.
