SamaN FAQ

1How much SamaN varnish do I need?

The interior varnish covers 500 to 600 sq ft per gallon (3.78 L) per coat, and SamaN recommends 2 or 3 coats. A 12 × 12 ft floor is 144 sq ft, so 3 coats is about 432 sq ft, or roughly three-quarters of a gallon. A 946 mL can covers about 125 to 150 sq ft per coat.

2What temperature can I apply SamaN interior varnish at?

SamaN's data sheet says 60 to 80°F (about 16 to 27°C) and 30 to 80% relative humidity. In a Canadian winter, keep the room heated to that range while you work and while it cures. At 70°F and 50% humidity, recoat in 1 to 2 hours; SamaN says full cure takes about 7 to 10 days.

3Can I use the interior varnish outside?

No. SamaN's data sheet says the interior varnish is for interior wood only. For fences, doors, windows, garden furniture and rails, use the Exterior Water-Based Varnish. SamaN's page for it does not list an application temperature or dry time, so follow the label.

4Which sheen should I choose?

The interior varnish comes in matte, satin, semi-gloss and gloss. For the flattest look, choose Dead Flat Varnish. The exterior varnish comes in flat, satin and semi-gloss.

5Can I use the Perfection kit on any floor?

It is for hardwood, laminate, vinyl and tile floors. SamaN says not to use it on a floor that has been oiled or waxed. The restorer dries in about 1 hour at 70°F, you can walk on it after at least 4 hours, and heavy traffic should wait 24 hours. Apply at 60 to 80°F. See the kit.

6How should I prepare wood before varnishing?

Remove dirt, grease and old wax first. TSP Eco is a cleaner and degreaser for woodwork, walls and other surfaces, and it is rinse-free. Fill cracks and holes with Latex Wood Filler. Do not use steel wool between varnish coats.

7Do you carry SamaN wood stains?

This collection currently lists varnishes, the floor restoring kit, wood filler and TSP Eco. SamaN makes water-based stains that are ready to use and need one coat. Contact us to ask about stain availability.
