Is Osmo TopOil food safe?

Yes. Once properly dried, Osmo TopOil is certified for direct contact with food, making it suitable for wooden kitchen countertops, chopping boards, butcher blocks and other food-contact wood surfaces.

Can I use Osmo TopOil on butcher block countertops?

Yes. Butcher blocks and solid wood kitchen countertops are among the primary applications for Osmo TopOil. The hardwax-oil formula provides water and stain resistance while preserving the natural appearance of the wood.

Can Osmo TopOil be used on cutting boards?

Yes. Osmo recommends TopOil for chopping and cutting boards as well as other wooden surfaces that come into contact with food.

What is the difference between TopOil finishes?

TopOil 3045 Clear Satin enhances the natural colour and grain while providing a satin appearance. TopOil 3056 Clear Matte also enhances the natural colour of the wood but provides a lower-sheen matte appearance. TopOil 3025 Natural contains subtle pigmentation designed to counteract the wet-look effect of clear finishes and keep lighter woods looking closer to their unfinished colour. TopOil 3026 Acacia adds a warm, lightly coloured appearance while allowing the natural wood grain to remain visible.

How many coats of Osmo TopOil do I need?

The recommended number of coats depends on the application method. Osmo recommends approximately two coats with a microfibre roller, two to three coats with a flat brush, or three coats with an Oil Applicator Fleece. Cloth application produces a very thin finish and is not recommended for high-wear surfaces where maximum durability and stain resistance are required.

How long does Osmo TopOil take to dry?

Under normal conditions of approximately 23°C and 50% relative humidity, each coat takes approximately 8–10 hours to dry. Lower temperatures, higher humidity, poor ventilation or excessive application can increase drying time.

Does Osmo TopOil waterproof wood?

TopOil makes the finished surface highly water repellent, but it should not be described as making wood completely waterproof. It is designed to protect wood against common household liquids and everyday spills.

Does Osmo TopOil change the colour of wood?

Yes, the final appearance depends on the version selected. Clear Satin and Clear Matte enhance the natural colour of the wood and can create a richer appearance. Natural contains subtle pigmentation designed to reduce this wet-look effect on lighter woods, while Acacia adds a warm, lightly coloured appearance. Always test TopOil on a sample or inconspicuous area of the actual wood before completing the project.

Can TopOil be spot repaired?

Yes. One advantage of the microporous hardwax-oil system is that worn areas can be maintained, refreshed and spot repaired without stripping or sanding the entire countertop.

What can I use Osmo TopOil on?

TopOil is suitable for wooden countertops, butcher blocks, tabletops, chopping boards, furniture, desks, shelving, solid wood and edge-glued panels. It can also be used on cork and OSB.
