Envirolak Envirothane 170 & 170-TB High Solids Water-Based Primer

Envirothane 170 is a professional water-based urethane primer for interior wood finishing. It is a 70% solids white primer with strong filling, and it won't swell MDF fibres. It works as a 1K or 2K product. 170-TB is the tannin-blocking version for woods that bleed. Both are made for cabinetry, tables, furniture and millwork.

Key Features

  • 70% solids by weight, for good fill on MDF, veneer and wood.
  • Fast: dry to touch in 10 minutes and ready to sand in 40–60 minutes at 20 °C.
  • 1K or 2K: add CAT100-LV hardener for veneer, solid wood and refinishing.
  • Low VOC: 54 g/L, with water clean-up.
  • Spray, brush or roll, including airless, air-assisted airless and HVLP.

Where to Use It

Interior cabinets, tables, furniture and millwork in MDF, veneer or solid wood. Use 170-TB over tannin-rich wood. Interior wood only. Professional product: use the 2K system on veneer, solid wood and refinish jobs. Apply with the coating at 20 °C (68 °F) or higher.

Versions and Sizes

  • 170: universal white primer. 3.79 L (1 gal) or 15 L (4 gal).
  • 170-TB: the same primer with tannin blocking. 3.79 L (1 gal) or 15 L (4 gal).

Envirothane 170, 160-TB or 180?

170 is the high-fill 1K/2K white urethane primer. Envirocryl 160-TB is a 1K tannin-blocking white primer. Envirothane 180 Neutral is the one to tint for dark colours.

Application Guide
  1. Prepare the surface. Sand solid wood with 150 or 180 grit and MDF with 240–320 grit. Remove all dust.
  2. Choose 1K or 2K. Use 2K on veneer, solid wood or a refinish. Stir in 5% CAT100-LV by weight and mix well.
  3. Stir and reduce if needed for your equipment. Keep the coating at 20 °C or higher.
  4. Apply 4–6 mils wet, by spray, brush or roller. Use a nylon or polyester brush, or a mohair, velour or microfibre roller.
  5. Let it dry. Touch-dry takes about 10 minutes and sanding 40–60 minutes at 20 °C.
  6. Sand the primer with 320 or 400 grit paper or fine sponges.
  7. Topcoat with Envirothane or Envirocryl topcoats. Flush equipment with water.
FAQ
1How much primer do I need?

The TDS gives film weight, not coverage: 16–24 g per 0.1 m². At about 1.5 specific gravity, a 3.79 L can covers roughly 24–35 m² (255–380 sq ft) per coat before spray losses. For 15 m² of cabinets, plan on about half a can per coat.

2What's the difference between 170 and 170-TB?

170-TB adds tannin blocking for woods that bleed through finishes. Otherwise both are the same 70% solids white primer.

3Do I need the hardener?

On MDF you can use it as a 1K primer. On veneer, solid wood and refinishing, the TDS says to use it as a 2K system with CAT100-LV hardener. Pot life is about 2 hours.

4What can I topcoat it with?

Envirolak lists Envirothane 200, Envirocryl 400, Envirothane 100 (1K or 2K) or Envirothane 800. Sand the primer with 320 or 400 grit first.

5What spray equipment works?

Airless at 2,000–3,000 psi, air-assisted airless at 500–800 psi fluid with 25 psi air, or HVLP with a 5-stage turbine. A cup gun and brush or roller also work.

6What temperature does it need?

The coating should be at 20 °C (68 °F) or higher when applied. Store it at 18–25 °C and protect it from freezing and direct sunlight.

7Can I use it outdoors?

No. The TDS covers interior wood finishing: cabinetry, tables, furniture and millwork.

8How long does it keep, and how do I clean up?

Shelf life is 12 months unopened. Flush equipment with water until it runs clear.
