Exterior Paint FAQ

1How much exterior paint do I need?

Aura Exterior and Regal Select Exterior cover 250–350 sq ft per 3.79 L, and Element Guard covers 300–400 sq ft. For 1,500 sq ft of siding at about 300 sq ft per can, one coat takes about 5 cans. Bare surfaces need two coats, so plan on about 10.

2What's the difference between Aura, Regal Select and Element Guard?

Aura Exterior is the top line, with Colour Lock for fade-resistant colour. Regal Select Exterior is a high-build paint that bridges small cracks. Element Guard is mildew-resistant and rain-resistant 60 minutes after application. All three are 100% acrylic.

3When can I paint outside in Ontario?

Benjamin Moore lists a minimum of about 1.7 °C (35 °F) for air and surface on Aura Exterior, Regal Select Exterior and Element Guard. The maximum is 32 °C for Regal Select and 37.7 °C for Aura and Element Guard. In southern Ontario that generally means spring through to October, on dry days when the temperature stays above the minimum until the paint dries.

4Which finish should I choose?

Flat or Low Lustre for siding and stucco, since a lower sheen hides surface flaws. Soft Gloss for trim, shutters and doors, where you want a harder, easier-to-clean surface. Check the finishes offered on each product page.

5Do I need to prime before painting?

Often not. Aura Exterior and Regal Select Exterior are self-priming on most properly prepared surfaces. Prime bleeding woods like cedar, bare concrete, rough masonry and bare metal, for example with Fresh Start High-Hiding All Purpose Primer.

6Can I paint vinyl siding?

Aura Exterior, Regal Select Exterior and Element Guard are all listed for vinyl. For Aura, Benjamin Moore says not to go darker than the original colour or below an LRV of 55, unless it is a Benjamin Moore Colour for Vinyl. Check the product data sheet before choosing a dark colour.

7Can you tint exterior paint to any colour?

Yes. We tint Benjamin Moore paint to any of their colours, and we can match colours from other brands. Enter the colour name and number when you order, or contact us with questions.
