Benjamin Moore Fresh Start High-Hiding All Purpose Primer
Fresh Start High-Hiding All Purpose Primer is Benjamin Moore's 100% acrylic interior and exterior primer for big colour changes. It gives maximum hide and a uniform finish, seals and suppresses most stains and sticks to most surfaces, including glossy ones. It dries fast, resists mildew and has low VOC (under 50 g/L). It cleans up with soap and water.

Where to Use It
Interior and exterior drywall, wood, plaster, masonry, brick, stucco, concrete, tile, ceiling tile, galvanized metal, aluminum, fiberglass, vinyl and PVC, and previously painted surfaces. Don't apply below 4.4 °C (40 °F) or above 32 °C (90 °F). Let new plaster and masonry cure first.

Application Guide
- Prep. Clean off dirt, grease and mildew. Scrape loose paint and sand glossy areas smooth. Let new plaster or masonry cure.
- Check the weather. Surface and air must be 4.4–32 °C. In spring and fall, watch for cold mornings and evenings, and don't prime outdoors in freezing weather.
- Stir well before and during use.
- Apply one coat by brush, roller or spray, working from unpainted areas into wet sections. Add a second coat for drastic colour changes.
- Let it dry 1 hour before topcoating.
- Topcoat with your paint. Clean tools with soap and water.
FAQ
1How much Fresh Start primer do I need?
Each 3.79 L covers 400–450 sq ft per coat. A 12 × 12 ft bedroom with 8 ft ceilings has about 380 sq ft of wall, so one coat takes about 1 gallon.
2Do I need primer over old paint?
It helps for big colour changes, glossy finishes and stained areas. Fresh Start adheres to glossy surfaces. For a similar colour in good condition, a paint-and-primer may be enough.
3Do I need primer on new drywall?
Yes, prime new drywall before painting. Fresh Start is recommended for drywall, or see Premium Drywall Primer, which is made for it.
4Can it be tinted?
Benjamin Moore lists it as tintable, and we sell a Tinted version in 946 mL and 3.79 L. Enter the colour number and name when you order.
5Does it block water, smoke or tannin stains?
Benjamin Moore says it seals and suppresses most stains. It doesn't name specific stain types, so for heavy water, smoke or tannin bleed, test a small area first.
6Can I use it outside?
Yes. It's rated for interior and exterior use, including wood, fibre cement, masonry, stucco, aluminum and galvanized metal. Apply between 4.4 and 32 °C.
7Primer or paint-and-primer in one?
Use a primer for drastic colour changes, stains and tough surfaces. Paint-and-primer works best over sound paint in a similar colour.
8How long until I can paint over it?
It dries in 30 minutes and can be recoated or topcoated after 1 hour at normal temperatures. Cool or humid Canadian weather can slow this.
