Application Guide
- Check the forecast. Air and surface must be at least 1.7 °C. Cool, humid weather slows drying.
- Prep. Clean off oil, grease, wax, rust, mildew, chalk and loose paint. Surfaces must be dry.
- Prime where needed. Wood and concrete are self-priming. Prime bleeding woods and unglazed brick with Fresh Start High-Hiding All Purpose Primer, and pitted vinyl as needed.
- Stir well, then apply from the unpainted area into the wet area.
- Second coat after 4 hours if needed.
- Wait 2 weeks before washing the surface.
FAQ
1How much Element Guard do I need?
A 3.79 L can covers 300–400 sq ft per coat. For 1,500 sq ft of siding, one coat takes about 4 to 5 cans. Two coats take about 8 to 10.
2How soon can it get rained on?
Benjamin Moore says it resists rain as soon as 60 minutes after application. Its data sheet says cool temperatures and high humidity lengthen dry and recoat times, so allow longer in damp weather.
3How late in the season can I paint?
Air and surface temperature must be at least 1.7 °C (35 °F). Surfaces must be dry, so skip mornings with dew or frost.
4Can I paint over existing paint?
Yes. Previously painted wood, hardboard, masonry, EIFS and vinyl are approved surfaces. Clean the surface, scrape loose paint and let it dry first.
5Do I need a primer?
Not on wood, engineered wood or concrete. Prime bleeding woods like cedar, unglazed brick and pitted vinyl. Vinyl is usually fine without one.
6Which finish should I choose?
Flat or Low Lustre for siding and masonry. Soft Gloss for trim, doors and accents. The 18.9 L pail comes in Flat and Low Lustre only.
7Can I use it on metal?
Metal isn't on Benjamin Moore's approved surface list for Element Guard. For railings and gates, see our Rust-A-Void enamel.
8What does the warranty cover?
The limited lifetime warranty covers blistering, peeling and weathering failure on properly prepared surfaces, for the original residential owner only. Read the full terms on the data sheet.
