Flat – K400

The Flat finish provides a low-reflective appearance that helps conceal surface imperfections and creates a smooth, traditional exterior finish.

Best for:

Low Lustre – K401

The Low Lustre finish provides a lightly reflective, smooth appearance with a subtle sheen that balances appearance, durability and versatility.

It is an excellent all-around choice for exterior siding and many architectural surfaces when you want more depth than a flat finish without the shine of a gloss coating. Benjamin Moore describes Low Lustre as lightly reflective with a rich appearance.

Soft Gloss – F403

The Soft Gloss finish provides a more reflective, durable appearance and is especially suitable for architectural details and surfaces where added sheen is desirable.

Best for:
Doors, trim, garage doors, siding, fences and other exterior surfaces where a richer, more washable-looking finish is preferred.

Sheen: Approximately 45–60 units at 60°
Coverage: Approximately 275–375 sq. ft. per 3.79 L at the recommended film thickness.

Coverage & Dry Time

Coverage varies by sheen, surface texture, porosity, colour and application method.

These drying times are based on approximately 25°C / 77°F and 50% relative humidity. Cooler temperatures and higher humidity will increase drying, recoating and curing times. Painted surfaces should be allowed approximately two weeks before washing.

Surface Preparation

Proper surface preparation is essential for maximum adhesion and long-term exterior durability.

Surfaces should be clean, dry and free of dirt, oil, grease, wax, rust, mildew, chalk and loose or peeling paint. Glossy surfaces should be dulled before painting, and loose material should be removed from masonry surfaces.

New masonry should generally be allowed to cure for approximately 30 days before priming or painting. Very smooth poured or precast concrete may require abrasion or etching after removal of curing compounds and form-release agents.

Bare or difficult substrates may require an appropriate Benjamin Moore primer.

Is Regal Select Exterior Self-Priming?

Regal Select Exterior is self-priming on many properly prepared surfaces, but that does not mean primer is unnecessary in every application.

For example, Benjamin Moore specifies that properly prepared wood, fibre cement, hardboard, non-ferrous metals and cured masonry may be suitable for self-priming systems depending on the finish and substrate. Bare substrates commonly require two coats, while previously painted surfaces may require one or two coats. Difficult or staining substrates should be primed appropriately.

Bleeding woods such as cedar and redwood may require a suitable stain-blocking or siding primer.

Painting Vinyl Siding

Regal Select Exterior can be used on properly prepared vinyl and vinyl composite siding, and primer is generally unnecessary unless areas are pitted or porous.

However, colour selection is extremely important. Benjamin Moore warns against painting vinyl with a colour significantly darker than its original colour unless the selected colour complies with appropriate vinyl-safe colour guidelines. Dark colours can absorb additional heat and potentially cause vinyl siding to warp.

Apply paint generously from an unpainted area into the wet edge and maintain a consistent film thickness.

Application Temperature

Regal Select Exterior can be applied at surface temperatures as low as approximately 1.6°C / 35°F, making it well suited to spring and fall exterior painting conditions.

Low Lustre: up to approximately 32°C / 90°F

Avoid painting when weather conditions are unsuitable or when rain, condensation or temperatures outside the recommended range may interfere with drying and curing

Clean Up

Clean brushes, rollers and other application equipment promptly with warm soapy water after use.

Protect the product from freezing and store between approximately 4.4°C and 35°C / 40°F and 95°F.
