Benjamin Moore Woodluxe Deck and Siding Exterior Stain – Solid
Woodluxe Solid is Benjamin Moore's water-based, 100% acrylic solid stain for exterior wood. It hides the wood grain but lets the texture show through. Use it on decks, siding, fences and furniture.
Key Features
- Solid colour: masks the grain, and the wood's texture still shows through.
- Water-based: soap-and-water clean-up and under 100 g/L VOC.
- UV- and mildew-resistant coating with all-weather protection.
- Low film build to reduce cracking and peeling.
- Easy to apply and recoat: recoat after a minimum of 4 hours.
Where to Use It
Exterior wood decking, siding, fencing, shakes and outdoor furniture. It works best on softwoods like cedar and pine, and it is also approved for composite wood. Exterior use only. Not for concrete or masonry. Don't apply below 4.4 °C (40 °F) or above 32.2 °C (90 °F). New pressure-treated lumber must dry to under 15% moisture first.
Colours and Sizes
Available in 236 mL (sample), 3.79 L and 18.9 L. Tinted to any Benjamin Moore colour, and we can match colours from other brands too. Enter the colour number and name when you order.
Solid or Semi-Transparent?
Solid stain gives uniform colour and hides the grain and minor flaws. If you want to see more of the wood, choose Woodluxe Semi-Transparent. Semi-Solid sits in between.

Application Guide
- Pick your day. In Canada that is usually late spring to early fall, with air and surface temperatures of 4.4–32.2 °C. Avoid direct sun, which causes lap marks.
- Prep the wood. It must be clean, dry and absorbent, with moisture under 15%. Wash with Woodluxe All-In-One Wood Cleaner (K018). Sand smooth new wood or use Woodluxe Wood Brightener and Neutralizer (K017).
- Fix old surfaces. Treat gray, weathered wood with Wood Restorer. Remove flaking or peeling finishes with sanding or Wood Stain Remover.
- Prime tannin-rich wood. On cedar or redwood, use Fresh Start Exterior Deck & Siding Primer (K094) or Fresh Start High-Hiding All Purpose Primer.
- Stir and intermix containers for even colour.
- Stain a few boards at a time, full length, keeping a wet edge. Back-brush if you roll or spray.
- Recoat after at least 4 hours. Keep furniture off a deck for 48 hours.
FAQ
1How much Woodluxe Solid do I need?
A 3.79 L can covers 300–400 sq ft per coat. A 12 × 16 ft deck is 192 sq ft. Add about 100 sq ft for railings, so roughly 290 sq ft. Two coats is about 580 sq ft: plan on 2 cans of 3.79 L. Rough wood uses more.
2Can I apply it over old stain or paint?
Over old stain, yes, if it is weathered but not flaking or peeling. Wash it and let it dry. Remove flaking or peeling finish first by sanding or with a stain remover.
3Solid or semi-transparent stain: which should I choose?
Solid hides the grain and gives an even colour, which suits older or mismatched wood. Semi-transparent shows more grain.
4How should I prep the wood?
Clean with Woodluxe All-In-One Wood Cleaner, rinse and let dry. Sand new smooth wood or use a brightener. Treat gray wood with Wood Restorer. The wood must be under 15% moisture and absorb water.
5When is the best time of year to stain in Canada?
Apply when air and surface temperatures are between 4.4 and 32.2 °C. That is usually late spring through early fall. Avoid rain and direct sun.
6How long before I can walk on it?
Recoat after at least 4 hours. For decks, Benjamin Moore says to let the stain dry for 48 hours before putting furniture back and returning the deck to service.
7Do I need a primer?
Usually no, it is self-priming on prepared wood. On tannin-rich cedar or redwood, prime first with Fresh Start Exterior Deck & Siding Primer or High-Hiding All Purpose Primer.
