Osmo TopOil Food Safe Hardwax Oil for Countertops

Protect and enhance wood countertops, butcher blocks, tables and other interior wood surfaces with Osmo TopOil, a premium food-safe hardwax oil designed for surfaces where durability, water resistance and a natural wood appearance matter.

Osmo TopOil combines natural plant oils and hard waxes to penetrate the wood while creating a durable, breathable surface. Unlike traditional film-forming finishes, the microporous finish will not crack, peel, flake or blister and can be spot repaired or refreshed when signs of wear appear.

Once dry, Osmo TopOil is suitable for surfaces that come into contact with food and is an excellent choice for kitchen countertops, butcher blocks, tabletops, chopping boards, charcuterie boards and furniture.

Everyday spills including coffee, tea, wine, beer, cola, fruit juice, milk and water bead on the protected surface and can simply be wiped away.

A Food-Safe Finish Designed for Wood Countertops

Kitchen countertops and butcher blocks require more than an attractive wood finish. They need protection capable of handling water, food, spills and daily cleaning.

Osmo TopOil is specifically designed for these demanding interior wood surfaces.

The natural oils penetrate into the pores of the wood while hard waxes create a protective, breathable surface. This combination provides excellent resistance while preserving the natural look and feel of the wood.

Once properly applied and cured, TopOil provides a food-safe surface suitable for areas such as kitchen worktops, tables and chopping boards.

Resistant to Water, Coffee, Wine & Everyday Spills

Osmo TopOil provides excellent resistance to many of the substances wood countertops encounter every day.

The finished surface is resistant to:

  • Water

  • Coffee

  • Tea

  • Wine

  • Beer

  • Cola and fizzy drinks

  • Fruit juice

  • Milk

Instead of quickly penetrating into the wood, liquids bead on the protected surface, allowing most everyday spills to simply be wiped away.

Osmo TopOil meets DIN 68861-1A requirements for resistance to these common household liquids.

Ideal Uses for Osmo TopOil

Osmo TopOil is recommended for protecting interior wood surfaces including:

  • Kitchen countertops

  • Wood worktops

  • Butcher blocks

  • Chopping and cutting boards

  • Charcuterie boards

  • Dining tables

  • Tabletops

  • Desks

  • Shelving

  • Furniture

  • Solid wood

  • Edge-glued wood panels

It is also suitable for cork and OSB surfaces.

Osmo TopOil Colours & Finishes

Choosing the right TopOil colour can significantly affect the final appearance of the wood.

3056 Clear Matte

TopOil 3056 Clear Matte enhances the natural colour and grain of the wood. Like most clear oil finishes, it creates a permanent "wet-look" effect that makes the wood appear richer and slightly darker.

A great choice when you want to highlight the natural character and grain of the timber.

3025 Natural

TopOil 3025 Natural is designed to counteract the wet-look effect associated with clear oils and preserve an appearance closer to unfinished wood.

It is an excellent option for light-coloured woods when you want protection while maintaining a more natural, untreated appearance.

3026 Acacia

TopOil 3026 Acacia is lightly pigmented to add warmth and an elegant colour to the wood while providing the same protective characteristics of TopOil.

Important: Wood species, preparation and application technique can affect the final colour. Always perform a test application before finishing the entire surface.

How to Apply Osmo TopOil

For maximum durability and stain resistance on countertops and tabletops, application with an Osmo Flat Brush or Microfibre Roller is recommended.

Surface Preparation

The wood must be clean, dry and free from previous incompatible coatings.

Sand unfinished or previously prepared wood as required, finishing approximately at P120-P150 grit. Carefully remove all sanding dust before applying TopOil.

The wood moisture content should not exceed 20%.

Do not thin the product. Shake well before application.

Brush or Roller Application

First Coat

Apply one thin and even coat using an Osmo Flat Brush or Microfibre Roller.

Work the finish evenly across the surface and finish in the direction of the wood grain.

Allow approximately 8-10 hours to dry with good ventilation.

Second Coat

Apply a second thin and even coat using the same method.

Allow another 8-10 hours of drying time with adequate ventilation.

Two brush or roller coats are normally recommended for maximum durability and stain resistance.

Highly absorbent wood species may require additional product. Always perform a test area before completing the project.

Cloth Application

TopOil can also be applied using a lint-free cloth or Osmo Easy Pad.

Apply the product very thinly, working it into the wood before removing excess finish from the surface.

Approximately 3-4 thin coats may be required when applying TopOil by cloth, with 8-10 hours of drying time between coats.

For heavily used countertops and tabletops where maximum stain resistance is required, brush or roller application is generally preferred.

Coverage & Drying Time

Coverage: Approximately 258-516 sq. ft. per litre, per coat, depending on the wood and application method.

A 500mL container can therefore cover approximately 129-258 sq. ft. per coat under appropriate surface conditions.

Drying Time: Approximately 8-10 hours per coat under normal conditions.

Full Cure: Allow approximately 2-3 weeks for TopOil to fully cure and harden. During the curing period, wipe up liquid spills promptly.

Lower temperatures, high humidity, poor ventilation or applying the product too heavily can increase drying time.

Easy Maintenance & Spot Repairs

One of the major advantages of an Osmo hardwax-oil finish is how easily it can be maintained.

Unlike many conventional varnishes and polyurethane finishes, you generally don't need to strip the entire surface when localized wear develops.

When signs of wear become visible, clean the surface and apply a thin maintenance coat to the affected area as required.

For routine cleaning, use a damp rather than saturated cloth. Osmo Wash and Care can be used for regular maintenance, while Osmo Liquid Wax Cleaner can help clean tougher stains and regenerate the finish.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Osmo TopOil food safe?

Yes. Once properly dried and cured, Osmo TopOil is DIN and EN rated for direct contact with food, making it suitable for wooden kitchen countertops, chopping boards, butcher blocks and other food-contact wood surfaces.

Can I use Osmo TopOil on butcher block countertops?

Yes. Butcher blocks and solid wood kitchen countertops are among the primary applications for Osmo TopOil. The hardwax-oil formula provides water and stain resistance while preserving the natural appearance of the wood.

Can Osmo TopOil be used on cutting boards?

Yes. Osmo recommends TopOil for chopping and cutting boards as well as other wooden surfaces that come into contact with food.

What is the difference between Osmo TopOil 3056 and 3025?

TopOil 3056 Clear Matte enhances the natural colour of wood and creates the richer appearance commonly associated with applying a clear oil.

TopOil 3025 Natural contains subtle pigmentation designed to counteract this wet-look effect and keep lighter woods looking closer to their unfinished colour.

How many coats of Osmo TopOil do I need?

For countertops and other high-use surfaces, Osmo recommends two thin coats when applying with a brush or roller. Cloth application generally requires additional thinner coats.

How long does Osmo TopOil take to dry?

Under normal conditions, each coat takes approximately 8-10 hours to dry. Lower temperatures, higher humidity, poor ventilation or excessive application can increase drying time.

How long does Osmo TopOil take to fully cure?

Allow approximately 2-3 weeks for the finish to fully cure and harden. During this period, wipe up liquid spills promptly.

Does Osmo TopOil waterproof wood?

TopOil makes the finished surface highly water repellent, but it should not be described as making wood completely waterproof. It is designed to protect wood against common household liquids and everyday spills.

Does Osmo TopOil change the colour of wood?

It depends on the version selected. 3056 Clear Matte enhances the natural colour and grain and produces a wet-look effect. 3025 Natural is designed to minimize this effect and preserve an appearance closer to untreated wood.

Can Osmo TopOil be repaired without sanding the entire countertop?

Yes. One of the advantages of the microporous hardwax-oil system is that worn areas can be maintained, refreshed and spot repaired without stripping or sanding the entire surface.

What can I use Osmo TopOil on?

TopOil is suitable for wooden countertops, butcher blocks, tabletops, chopping boards, furniture, desks, shelving, solid wood and edge-glued panels. It can also be used on cork and OSB.
