Floor & Masonry Coatings FAQ

1What is the best paint for a garage floor?

For a tough epoxy finish, use GarageGuard 2-Part Epoxy. It is for interior concrete only and is rated for hot tires after 5–7 days. For a ready-to-use option, GarageGuard 1-Part allows vehicles after 3–5 days and Hot Trax after 5–7 days.

2Can I use Floor & Patio paint in a garage?

Not where cars park. Benjamin Moore notes that many tires contain compounds that can attack latex paints and cause lifting. Floor & Patio suits basements, porches, patios and breezeways.

3How much floor coating do I need?

Coverage per 3.79 L per coat: Floor & Patio 500–600 sq ft, TuffCrete up to 550, GarageGuard 1-Part 350–450, Hot Trax 300–400, GarageGuard Epoxy 250–300 and Sure Step 80–120. A 20 × 20 ft garage (400 sq ft) needs two coats, so about 2 to 3 gallons of GarageGuard 1-Part.

4How do I prepare a concrete floor?

Clean off oil and grease, and let new concrete cure at least 30 days. Bare concrete usually needs etching or grinding to a fine-sandpaper profile. Do not acid etch previously painted floors. The data sheets also call for a dry slab, so check moisture first.

5When can I paint concrete in Canada?

Apply when air and surface temperatures are between 10°C and 32°C (50–90°F), out of direct sun, and not near the dew point. Spring through early fall is the usual window for patios and porches. Cool, damp weather slows drying and curing.

6How long until I can walk or drive on it?

At 25°C: GarageGuard Epoxy takes 24 hours for light foot traffic, 72 hours for cool tires and 5–7 days for hot tires. GarageGuard 1-Part takes 8 hours for feet and 3–5 days for vehicles. Hot Trax takes 24 hours for feet, 5 days for cool tires and 7 days for hot tires.

7Which coating is non-slip, and which is not for cars?

Sure Step has a textured, skid-resistant finish for steps, walkways and pool decks. It is for foot traffic only. TuffCrete is also not for driveways or garage floors. Smooth floor coatings can be slippery when wet, so add Anti-Skid Additive where you need grip.
