Benjamin Moore Coronado Rust-A-Void Rust Preventative Polyurethane Enamel

Rust-A-Void is an alkyd polyurethane enamel that forms a durable, rust-preventive film on metal. Benjamin Moore lists it for handrails, stairs, doors and piping in commercial, institutional and residential settings. It is for interior and exterior metal and comes in Satin, Semi-Gloss or Gloss.

Key Features

  • Rust-preventive enamel film for metal.
  • Tenacious adhesion to properly prepared metal.
  • Interior and exterior use.
  • Goes directly on steel and iron. A rust-inhibitive metal primer is recommended for extra protection.
  • Brush, roller or airless spray.

Where to Use It

Metal handrails, stairs, doors, pipework, fences, gates and decorative metalwork. Galvanized steel and aluminum need an acrylic metal primer first. For metal only. Not for immersion service. Do not apply below 7.2 °C, if rain threatens, or within 5 °F of the dew point. Do not thin.

Finishes, Colours and Sizes

  • Satin: White or Black.
  • Semi-Gloss: White.

Rust-A-Void or Command?

Application Guide
  1. Check conditions. Surface and air must be at least 7.2 °C, and not within 5 °F of the dew point. Deep colours, humidity and cool weather slow drying.
  2. Prep. Remove wax, oil, grease, dust, loose rust and peeling paint. Dull glossy surfaces. Dull new, shiny non-ferrous metal with fine sandpaper.
  3. Prime where needed. Steel and iron can be coated directly. Use a rust-inhibitive metal primer for extra protection, and an acrylic metal primer on galvanized steel and aluminum.
  4. Stir well with a lifting motion. Do not thin.
  5. Apply a full coat, keeping a wet edge to avoid lap marks.
  6. Recoat after 12 hours. Clean tools with mineral spirits.
FAQ
1How much Rust-A-Void do I need?

A 3.79 L can covers 350–450 sq ft per coat. A 4 ft × 30 ft metal fence painted both sides is about 240 sq ft, so a 3.79 L can is enough for one coat.

2Do I need a primer?

On steel and iron you can apply it directly, though a rust-inhibitive metal primer is recommended for extra protection. Galvanized steel and aluminum need an acrylic metal primer.

3Can I paint over rust?

Remove loose rust and peeling paint first. The data sheet requires a surface free of loose rust, wax, oil, grease and dust.

4Is it for interior or exterior?

Both. It is listed for interior and exterior metal. It is not for immersion service, and it is for metal only.

5Which finish should I choose?

Satin for a low-sheen look, Semi-Gloss for a middle sheen and Gloss for the shiniest finish. Satin and Semi-Gloss come in fewer colours than Gloss.

6How long before I can recoat?

Touch dry in 2 hours and recoat in 12 hours at 25 °C and 50% humidity. Dark colours, humidity and cool weather make it longer.

7What is the best season to paint outdoors in Canada?

Any dry day at 7.2 °C or warmer, with no rain expected and the metal well above the dew point. Late spring to early fall is the easiest window.

8How do I clean up and dispose of rags?

Clean tools with mineral spirits right after use. Benjamin Moore warns that soaked rags can ignite on their own, so put them in a sealed, water-filled metal container.
