Pick your metal.

Tap a colour to see its sizes and prices, then choose it in one click. Not sure? Start with a 6 oz sample.

Screen colours are approximate. Metallics shift with light and viewing angle, so try a 6 oz sample on your surface first.

How much do I need?

Three sizes, from sample to feature wall.

Most colours need 2 coats, and some semi-opaque colours need 3. Coverage depends on the colour and your surface, so these are per-coat estimates.

How to apply it

Prime, paint, protect.

1

Prep and prime

Clean and sand the surface, then prime. Tint your primer close to your metallic: a warm tone under golds and coppers, a cool grey under silvers and pewters. On slick surfaces like laminate, use a bonding primer such as INSL-X Stix.

2

Apply thin coats

Apply 2–3 thin coats about 30 minutes apart, at 14–29 °C. Brush furniture and trim. On walls, work in 4-foot sections and back-roll in one direction to avoid lap marks. Or spray, thinned with up to 16 oz of water per gallon.

3

Protect it

On tabletops, doors, cabinets and other high-touch surfaces, finish with MasterClear Top Coat. It's made for these metallics, so it won't dull the shimmer. Apply 2 coats indoors.

Complete the finish

Everything you need for a lasting metallic finish.

BeforeA primer

Primer tinted close to your colour gives even coverage in fewer coats. Stix Bonding Primer handles slick surfaces like laminate and glossy paint. Ask us to tint it.

Modern Masters Metallic Paint

FAQ

Questions, answered.

How much metallic paint do I need?

Plan on 2 coats, or 3 for semi-opaque colours. A gallon covers about 200–400 sq ft per coat and a quart about 50–100 sq ft, depending on the colour and surface. A dresser or front door usually takes one quart. An accent wall of about 100 sq ft takes about a gallon for 2–3 coats.

Do I need a primer?

Yes. Metallics are partly translucent, so the colour underneath shows through. Prime with a primer tinted close to your metallic: warm tones under golds and coppers, cool greys under silvers and pewters. On slick surfaces, use a bonding primer like INSL-X Stix.

How do I avoid lap marks and streaks on a wall?

Work in 4-foot sections, keep a wet edge and back-roll every section in the same direction. Thin coats work better than heavy ones. For large walls, Modern Masters recommends adding up to 16 oz of Metallic Paint Extender per gallon to slow drying.

Do I need a top coat?

On most interior walls, no. On tabletops, cabinets, doors, railings and anything handled often, finish with 2 coats of MasterClear, which protects the finish without dulling the metallic look.

Can I use it outdoors?

The Metallic Paint Collection is made for interiors. Exterior use needs MasterClear on top (3 or more coats) and the right primer for the surface. Contact us before starting an exterior project.

Can I mix colours?

Yes. Modern Masters metallics can be intermixed to create custom shades. Mix enough for the whole project at once so the colour stays consistent.

Is every colour in stock?

Many colours and sizes ship from stock. Anything shown as special order can still be ordered for you. It takes about 2–4 weeks, and extra charges may apply. Contact us to place a special order.

How long does it take to dry?

About 30 minutes between coats and about 1 hour to touch at 21 °C and 50% humidity. Apply between 14 and 29 °C (58–85 °F).

How do I clean up?

It's water-based, so brushes, rollers and tools clean up with warm soapy water right after use.
