Because SRD RE is translucent, the final appearance will be influenced by the species, age, texture and natural colour of the wood. Always test the selected colour on a small area and allow it to dry before completing the project.

Drying & Return-to-Service Times

At approximately 21°C (70°F):

Dry to touch: 12 hours

When relative humidity exceeds 50%, the required drying time should be doubled. Temperature, humidity, film thickness, colour and airflow can also affect drying.

Surface Preparation

Proper surface preparation is essential when using ProLuxe SRD RE.

The wood must be clean and dry and free from dirt, dust, grime, mildew, oil, mill glaze, loose wood fibres and other contaminants.

Previous coatings must be completely removed before applying SRD RE.

After cleaning, sand vertical wood surfaces with approximately 80–120 grit sandpaper and horizontal surfaces such as decks with approximately 60–80 grit sandpaper. Always sand with the wood grain and completely remove sanding dust.

Allow the wood to dry thoroughly before staining. Wood moisture content should be no more than 18%.

Pressure-Treated Wood

New pressure-treated wood should be properly seasoned for at least six weeks, dry to a moisture content of 18% or less and free from salts or other water-soluble materials before application.

Water-repellent-treated lumber requires a minimum of approximately one year of weathering before coating.

How to Apply SICO ProLuxe SRD RE

Stir thoroughly before and frequently during application. Do not thin.

Apply one even coat in the direction of the wood grain. Avoid excessive application or allowing the product to puddle.

A soft, long-haired natural-bristle brush is the preferred application method.

If applying SRD RE with a roller or airless paint sprayer, immediately back-brush the surface to promote proper penetration and help produce a uniform finish.

Work on only a few boards at a time and maintain a wet edge to minimize lap marks.

For maximum protection, saturate end grain, nail holes and cracks. Where practical, coating all six sides of the wood provides additional protection.

Airless Spray Application

SRD RE can be applied using explosion-proof airless spray equipment.

Tip size: 0.011–0.015 in.

Pressure: 700–800 PSI

Immediately back-brush sprayed surfaces to promote penetration and ensure an even appearance.

Application Conditions

Apply when air and surface temperatures are between:

10°C and 32°C (50°F–90°F)

The ideal temperature is approximately 20°C ± 5°C.

Do not apply in direct sunlight or when rain, snow, heavy dew or temperatures below 4°C (40°F) are expected within 48 hours.

The wood surface should be at least 3°C (5°F) above the dew point.

Maintenance

Exterior wood finishes require periodic maintenance as they weather.

SICO provides a general maintenance guideline of approximately 2–3 years for south- and west-facing exposures and 3–4 years for north- and east-facing exposures.

These are guidelines rather than guaranteed maintenance intervals. Weather, exposure, elevation, wood species, colour, traffic and application conditions can cause maintenance to be required sooner.

Inspect the wood periodically and apply a maintenance coat when visibly required.
