Penofin Architectural Grade TSF Hardwood Stain – Waterborne Satin Finish

Penofin Architectural Grade TSF Hardwood Stain is a transparent satin finish for exterior hardwood decks, siding and fences. It combines modified natural oils with a waterborne alkyd-urethane hybrid resin. It penetrates the wood, repels water, stays breathable and doesn't flake, peel or chip. VOC is under 100 g/L and clean-up is with soap and water.

Key Features

  • Low VOC (under 100 g/L) with soap-and-water clean-up.
  • Water-repellent but breathable, with penetrating oils.
  • UV protection from Transoxide pigments, nano UV blockers and UV stabilizers.
  • No sanding or stripping before recoating.
  • Penofin's guide: reapply about every 2 years on decks and 4 years on fences and siding.

Where to Use It

New to slightly weathered, unsealed exterior hardwood decks, siding and fences. Not over paint, solid stain or film-forming finishes. Exterior hardwood only. Don't thin it.

Colours and Size

  • Natural: the natural-tone option.
  • Ipe: an ipe-toned colour.

3.79 L cans in both colours, in a satin sheen.

TSF Hardwood or Exterior Hardwood Formula?

TSF is waterborne, under 100 g/L VOC and cleans up with soap and water. Exterior Hardwood Formula is Penofin's penetrating oil finish for dense exotic hardwoods, in Ipe and Tigerwood tones.

FAQ
1How much TSF do I need for a 12 × 16 ft deck?

The floor is 192 sq ft. The first coat takes about 0.5–0.65 gallon (300–400 sq ft per gallon) and the second about 0.3–0.5 gallon, so roughly 0.8–1.1 gallons in all. One 3.79 L can is tight, so buy a second for railings or rough boards.

2Do I need two coats?

Yes. Penofin calls for two thin coats, with 4–6 hours between them. Don't thin the product.

3Is it only for hardwood?

It is made for new to slightly weathered, unsealed exterior hardwoods. For softwoods, pick a stain made for them.

4Can I put it over paint or old stain?

No. It is for unsealed wood. Film-forming finishes must come off first. On Penofin TSF itself, you can recoat without sanding or stripping once the wood is clean.

5What are the best conditions for applying it in Canada?

4.5–32 °C (40–90 °F), out of direct sun, on wood that isn't hot, with no rain expected for 24 hours. Cold mornings under 4.5 °C are outside the range.

6How long before I can use the deck?

Allow 72 hours before returning furniture and for heavy use.

7How often do I reapply it?

Penofin's guide is about every 2 years on decks and 4 years on fences and siding. Clean each spring and fall, and when the sheen looks dull, clean and apply a single coat.

8Is there a warranty?

Penofin gives a limited warranty of 2 years on horizontal surfaces and 4 years on vertical surfaces when it is applied as directed.
