Sico ProLuxe 1 Primary Coat RE – Translucent Exterior Wood Finish (formerly Sikkens Cetol 1)
Sico ProLuxe 1 Primary Coat RE is a premium translucent alkyd-oil basecoat for exterior vertical wood: log homes, siding, trim, doors and garage doors. It penetrates the grain for strong adhesion, and its transparent iron oxide pigments and UV absorbers bring out the wood's colour while protecting it. Top it with ProLuxe 23 Top Coat RE for the full 3-coat system. It's the same formula as Sikkens Cetol 1, under the Sico ProLuxe name.

Where to Use It
Log homes, wood siding, trim, doors and garage doors, as the first coat under ProLuxe 23. On fences and outdoor furniture, use 2 coats of ProLuxe 1 on its own. Not for decks, floors or other walking surfaces. Exterior use only.

The ProLuxe 3-Coat System

Application Guide
- Remove old coatings completely.
- Clean. Wet the wood, scrub with a TSP (or substitute) and bleach solution for 15–20 minutes, then power-wash at 500–800 psi.
- Dry 48 hours, until moisture content is 18% or less.
- Sand with 80–120 grit, with the grain, and remove the dust. Finish within 4 weeks.
- Apply one coat of ProLuxe 1 at 10–32 °C, ideally with a natural bristle brush.
- After 24 hours, apply two coats of ProLuxe 23 Top Coat, 24 hours apart.
- Dispose of rags safely. Oil-soaked rags can catch fire. Put them in a sealed, water-filled metal container.
FAQ
1Is ProLuxe 1 the same as Sikkens Cetol 1?
Yes. Sikkens Cetol 1 RE was renamed Sico ProLuxe 1 Primary Coat RE. Same formula, new name.
2Do I need ProLuxe 23 as well?
On log homes, siding, trim and doors, yes: one coat of ProLuxe 1, then two coats of ProLuxe 23. On fences and outdoor furniture, two coats of ProLuxe 1 alone is the recommended system.
3Can I use it on my deck?
No. ProLuxe 1 is for vertical wood and isn't recommended for decks or floors. For decks, use a penetrating deck oil like Penofin Stain & Sealer or Messmer's UV Plus.
4How much do I need?
Each 3.78 L covers 200–300 sq ft on rough wood or 250–350 sq ft on smooth wood. For 1,000 sq ft of smooth siding, plan on about 3–4 gallons of ProLuxe 1 and 6–8 gallons of ProLuxe 23 for two top coats.
5How long between coats?
Wait 24 hours at 21 °C before the next coat, and double that in high humidity. Keep rain off for 48 hours.
6How long does it last?
As a full system, plan on a maintenance coat of ProLuxe 23 every 2–3 years on south and west exposures and every 3–4 on north and east, before the wood starts to grey.
7Can I apply it over my existing finish?
No. For a first application, previous coatings must be fully removed. For maintenance of an existing ProLuxe system, just clean and add a coat of ProLuxe 23.
