Penofin Log On Wood Stain – Penetrating Oil for Log Homes & Timber Frames
Penofin Log On is a semi-transparent penetrating oil stain for log homes and timber-frame structures. It is made with sustainably harvested Brazilian Rosewood Oil, soaks into the wood instead of forming a film, and gives 99% UV protection plus mildew protection. Maintenance is a clean and a light recoat on worn areas.
Key Features
- Penetrating, non-film-forming finish that soaks into the wood fibres.
- 99% UV protection in three transparent tones.
- Mildew protection built in.
- Fast to handle: dry to touch in 3–4 hours, serviceable in 12 hours.
- Simple upkeep: clean, then recoat worn areas lightly.
Where to Use It
Exterior log walls, timber frames and other exterior wood. Not over paint, solid stain or other film-forming finishes. Wood treated with a non-Penofin product should be chemically stripped first. Wipe off the excess, or the finish dries tacky.
Colours and Size
- Whistler, Pocono and Aspen: three transparent tones that let the grain show.
Sold in 3.79 L (1 gallon) cans.

Application Guide
- Clean new wood. New wood can carry dirt and mill glaze. First Step Prep cleans lightly and removes mill glaze.
- Clean old bare wood with Pro-Tech Cleaner. If it has greyed or discoloured, follow with Pro-Tech Brightener.
- Strip non-Penofin finishes with an acrylic stripper such as Pro-Tech Stripper, then clean and brighten.
- Check conditions. Apply at 7–26 °C with humidity under 85%. Don't apply if the wood is hot to the touch. Bring the stain to room temperature and stir well, before and during use.
- Mask adjacent areas, then apply a liberal coat with a brush, pad or sprayer.
- Wait 20–30 minutes, then wipe off the excess with clean, non-lint cloths. Unwiped oil dries tacky on the surface.
- Handle rags safely. Oily rags can ignite on their own. Soak them in a bucket of water before disposal.
FAQ
1How much Log On do I need for my log home?
Plan on 175–300 sq ft per 3.79 L. For 800 sq ft of wall, that is about 3 to 5 cans. Rough or weathered logs use the lower coverage, so round up.
2Do I have to wipe it off?
Yes. Let it penetrate for 20–30 minutes, then wipe off the excess with clean, non-lint cloths. It is a penetrating finish, not a surface coating, and unwiped oil dries tacky.
3Can I apply it over an old finish?
Only over bare or previously Penofin-treated wood that is clean. Wood treated with a non-Penofin product should be chemically stripped with an acrylic stripper, then cleaned and brightened.
4What temperature can I apply it at?
7–26 °C (45–80 °F), with humidity under 85% and below 80% for best results. Don't apply to hot wood. Cold mornings under 7 °C are outside the range.
5How long until it is dry and cured?
Dry to touch in 3–4 hours, serviceable in 12 hours, moisture resistant in 24 hours and fully cured in 4–7 days.
6How do I maintain it?
Penofin suggests cleaning twice a year with Pro-Tech Cleaner, adding Brightener if the wood has greyed, then lightly recoating areas that show wear.
7Log On or Ultra Premium Red Label?
Choose Log On for log walls and timber frames. Choose Ultra Premium Red Label for decks, siding and fences, or if you want a wider choice of tones.
8How do I dispose of oily rags?
Oil-soaked rags can heat up and ignite on their own. Soak them in a bucket of water before you throw them out.
